The Islanders are not mainland Aboriginal Australians but a Melanesian seafaring people, and the Strait is the hinge where Australia meets the Pacific. The dhari asserts that distinct identity, a crown that belongs to the sea-roads as much as to the land.

The headdress is worn knowledge — genealogy, sea-country and ceremony gathered above the head of the dancer. To put it on is to carry one’s belonging visibly, a map of identity raised into the light of the dance.

Coiful este cunoaștere purtată — genealogie, ținut-mare și ceremonie adunate deasupra capului dansatorului. A-l pune înseamnă a-ți purta apartenența în văzul tuturor, o hartă a identității ridicată în lumina dansului.

Placed at the centre of the Torres Strait Islander flag, the dhari is a political as well as ceremonial sign: the assertion of a distinct nation within the wider Australian story, its identity crowned and flown.
