Before there was canvas there was the body. In awelye, the women’s ceremony of Utopia, designs are painted directly onto the skin of the torso in ochre, then sung and danced. Violet Petyarre transposes these marks to a lasting surface.

Designs made to vanishMotive făcute să dispară
The awelye designs are made to be worn for a single ceremony and rubbed away by its end. Their meaning lies partly in their impermanence: they belong to an event, a song, a moment of the body, not to a wall.
Motivele awelye sunt făcute spre a fi purtate pentru o singură ceremonie și șterse până la sfârșitul ei. Sensul lor stă în parte în impermanența lor: aparțin unui eveniment, unui cânt, unui moment al trupului, nu unui perete.
The body rememberedTrupul amintit
On canvas the arcs still follow the contour of the breastbone and the swaying of the dance. Petyarre does not abandon the body when she leaves it; she remembers it, so that the painting keeps the shape of the person who once wore the design.
Pe pânză, arcurile urmează încă și conturul sternului, și legănarea dansului. Petyarre nu părăsește trupul când îl lasă; și-l amintește, astfel încât pictura păstrează forma persoanei care a purtat cândva motivul.
